RAF Cardington receives The Freedom of Bedford 1959.
The Mayor of Bedford hands over the scroll granting the Freedom of Bedford to the station.
This photograph was sent in by Frank Naylor who served in the Balloon Unit at Cardington and was part of the parade on the day. Frank is to the left of the mayor indicated by an arrow.
July 16 1959 was a very special day for RAF Cardington - on that day the station was awarded the "Freedom of Entry into the Borough of Bedford" by the Mayor of Bedford. The Station Commander at the time was Group Captain Lousada.* Below is a full press report of the occasion as recorded in the Bedford Times.
*On Saturday May 18th 2019 Mr Michael Lousada a son of Group Captain Lousada kindly agreed to unveil a memorial stone to the station situated in front of the former Station Headquarters
